Wallacea Programme

Understanding biodiversity and evolutionary responses to environmental change.

ABOUT US

Together with Indonesia’s Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education NERC-UKRI funds an ambitious research programme in Wallacea – the meeting point of the Asian and Australian biota. Scientists are revealing how to safeguard unique ecosystems from the effects of environmental change, working towards solutions for effective management and restoration of the region and its biodiversity.

BACKGROUND

The Wallacea region spans 1680 islands of Sulawesi, the Moluccas and Lesser Sund asin central Indonesia, and forms the evolutionary transition zone between Asia and Australia. Wallacea serves as a living laboratory for the study of evolution owing to the separation and unification of disparate islands over tens of millions of years.
